Update
We have deployed a hot fix that defaults to TCP connexion for the command line `mysql`. If you use other utilities (such as `mysql2` Ruby gems via "config/database.yml"), you may still need to configure the connexion to use TCP to connect to 127.0.0.1.

We've received a few reports of MySQL connectivity problems when `apt-get` is used to install new packages. TCP connection should work (a la "mysql -h 127.0.0.1"). We are looking into a hot fix to work around this problem.
The error manifests as:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
